Yu Chengdong: The "Upgrade" M5 high-end intelligent driving version of all models in Wenjie no longer relies on high-precision maps

On March 23rd, Huawei’s spring flagship new product launch was held. Yu Chengdong, executive director of Huawei, CEO of Consumer BG, and CEO of Smart Car Solutions BU, spoiled a lot of information about Huawei’s automotive business. At this release, Yu Chengdong still positioned the Wenjie model with "far ahead", and said, "The net promoter score of Wenjie owners is as high as 86.4%, leading traditional luxury brands such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW; Wenjie ranks first in quality among all brands, higher than all car companies, and has a spontaneous combustion rate of 0."

In order to break through in the "inner volume" of the industry, Yu Chengdong announced that all models of Wenjie will upgrade the intelligent cockpit system Hongmeng HarmonyOS 3, and Quarter 1 will be pushed in batches in 2023. As a high-frequency touchpoint with the owner, the intelligent cockpit directly determines the experience a car brings to consumers to a certain extent. Whether it is the interaction pattern, physical space, sound, light, display, upgraded interior, or multi-screen design, HUD head-up display, streaming media rearview mirror, etc., it will bring a distinct differentiated experience for drivers and passengers, quickly grab consumers’ attention, and improve the competitiveness of the model.

At this press conference, Huawei also gave a detailed introduction to the details of the upcoming HarmonyOS 3, such as functions such as super desktop, PC collaboration, smart car search, Xiaoyi reminder, Xiaoyi no-wake-up and HUD highly adaptive adjustment, and added the main driver privacy mode. In addition, Yu Chengdong revealed that the high-end intelligent driving version of the two cars, Wenjie M5 and Wenjie M5 EV, will be released in April. It is worth noting that compared with the experience of Hongmeng cockpit, the level of intelligent driving ability of the previous Wenjie M5 has not reached the forward-looking position of the industry. And Yu Chengdong believes that "the two high-end intelligent driving versions released in April will bring an’unprecedented ‘intelligent driving experience."

The biggest advance for the Q & A M5 and Q & A M5 EV high-end intelligent driving versions to be released, whether from the teaser pictures or from the road test spy photos that have appeared before, is that the new car will be equipped with Huawei’s lidar and its corresponding auxiliary driving system, which will have the ability to pilot driving in urban areas, and does not rely on high-precision maps. "The update of high-precision maps is too slow, and the speed of obtaining them from city to city is too slow. We even have to toss a small road in Shanghai for a long time," Yu Chengdong said. Some analysts believe that in the implementation of the current urban navigation assistance driving system, there are two advantages to not relying on high-precision maps: one is to directly avoid the limitations of policy approval brought by high-precision maps, so that the plan can be quickly landed in more cities; the other is to directly subtract the cost of high-precision maps. After no longer relying on high-precision maps, the greatest convenience is that more urban users will be expected to experience the pilot assistance driving function in the urban area earlier and synchronously.

At present, there are three main models for Huawei’s smart car business, namely the parts supply model, the HI model and the Huawei Smart Choice model. Previously, only the HI model models were equipped with Huawei’s intelligent driving system. With the release of the high-end intelligent driving version of the M5 and M5 EV, the Qinjie series began to gradually carry Huawei’s intelligent driving system. In order to further enhance the sales and product power of Qinjie products, on the one hand, Yu Chengdong himself is increasing his investment in the Huawei Smart Choice model; on the other hand, Huawei has further strengthened its involvement in the Qinjie brand in publicity. Previously, the official account of AITO asked the world, together with all official communication pages, replaced the communication content with "HUAWEI asked the world", and at this press conference, Yu Chengdong also directly used the expression "Huawei asked the world".

HUAWEI is Huawei’s eco-car brand and a new business model pioneered by Huawei. This model can not only help car companies achieve commercial success, but also drive the large-scale sales of Huawei’s smart car parts. Huawei’s auto business is moving towards an accelerated stage.
